get to that pricey presidential fundraiser. you can see barricades are up. and the secret service is on standby. this is just the first of three events tonight aimed at raising campaign cash. for the sixth time this year, president obama is back in the bay area. he arrived at sfo just before 2:00. and he has a full schedule of fundraisers planned through the evening. starting with a small event at the intercontinental hotel in which supporters are paying $40,000 a pop to attend. >> he needs to get as much money going as he can to deal with the election in the battleground states. >> reporter: cal state east bay political science professor david baggin says with democratic dominant california pretty much in the bag, the president's really here for one purpose. >> we're a wealthy state. we're the biggest donor state. we're the state that both sides, even though we're a heavily

democratic state, both sides are going to come out and take advantage of that silicon valley money, hollywood money, that california gold. >> reporter: sharon hoffman is one of the handful of folks who paid top dollar to chat with the president in an intimate setting. and she is thrilled. >> it's a roundtable that is actually taking place apparently at a square table where he is going to talk and answer questions for approximately an hour about anything that the folks there want to talk about. so i'm really excited. it's a real treat and a privilege and really an honor. >> reporter: again, we understand that event is expected to last for about an hour. you can see the secret service continues to be on stand by here. now from here the president will travel about six blocks up to the bill graham civic auditorium, where he will attend two more pricey fundraisers. reporting live, jodi hernandez, nbc bay area news. >> thanks, jodi. just down the street from the

intercontinental hotel is the bill graham auditorium where the president's next event will take place. >> that's with a we fine jean elle. notable names getting ready to take the stage. not only the stage, but the kitchen, correct? >> reporter: that's right. along with the celebrities here, helping the president out, raising some money, security here is tight at civic center plaza. it's shut down to cars. but there are lots of people wandering around here, hoping for a chance to see president barack obama. not all of them are supporters. a group of protesters just marched into the plaza, protesting everything from the federal crackdown on medical marijuana to the wars in afghanistan and iraq. there are also thousands of people here who paid anywhere from $100 to $20,000 for, excuse me, a chance to see the president. some lined up for hours, hoping to get as close as possible to mr. obama at the fundraiser. the president will first be meeting with a group of about 100 bigger donors, talking to them over dinner. and the meal is being prepared by alice waters and tyler florence. then he will drop in on the

fundraising concert event. 6,000 people are attending a john legend and michael conti concert. the president is expected to address that crowd some time after 9:00 tonight, thanking them for the campaign contribution, and urging them to high pressure him get re-elected. so the president has a very busy evening here in san francisco. we'll be monitoring the events and have another update for you tonight at 6:00. reporting live in san francisco, jean elle, nbc bay area news. >> thank you so much, jean. and while the president was in the bay area, mitt romney was in virginia, giving a major speech on foreign policy. romney called for a change of course in the middle east and blamed the obama administration for making the region more dangerous. >> i know the president hoped for a safer, freer, and more prosperous middle east allayed with us. i share this hope. but hope is not a strategy. >> today's speech largely repackaged things romney has said before, but included a few specific ways he would change the president's approach.

>> president obama fired back in an ad scheduled to run in virginia, which is a key battleground state. the ad portrays romney as reckless and amateurish during a trip to england, israel and poland. how much you spending? these rising gas prices 50 cents higher in the past week alone. that costs you about $8 extra for every trip to the gas station. nbc bay area's stephanie trong joins us in oakland this evening. stephanie, gas prices and politics usually go hand in hand. what is the spin here? >> reporter: raj, it really depends on who you ask. if you ask the industry experts, they say the trend was already happening with the wholesale price. but other folks are saying it is politics. here at telegraph and 52nd in oakland, this valero is busy all day. now even with this trend, legislators say they have information that major industry players may have tipped the scales in their favor, and some lawmakers want an investigation. >> it's disgusting, but what can

you do about it? >> reporter: el cerrito neighbor and movie says it's been unbearable. >> you have to cut all the way around. >> reporter: governor jerry brown has already asked the california and resources board to move up the switch to the winter gas blend that is cheaper but less clean that usually isn't released until october 31st. in 1996 california raised the stakes to adopting these cleaner gas guidelines. but we are alone in the u.s. >> california is really an island in the gasoline market. >> reporter: uc berkeley's energy expert severin borenstein says california's cast costs 15 to 20 cents more per gallon, made worse when one of the refineries making california's gas shuts down. several are not at full capacity, including chevron partially shut down because of the fire. >> the politicians are trying to figure out what can they do or who can they claim. often they blame the refineries.

>> reporter: dianne feinstein is asking federal regulators to see if there was an illegal short squeeze. price spikes turn out years later to have been the result of malicious and manipulative trading affect. cawing on the ftc to react immediately and aggressively to protect california's consumers. borenstein says it's hard to prove but possible because there are only a few companies that produce the california clean blend. she says chevron as a hold of more than 20% of the market. >> those companies are in a position where if they change their output, it does move the price. the real question is then would they do that? would they fully produce a little less in order to keep prices higher? unfortunately, it's very hard to tell. >> reporter: and hard to tell because the california refineries don't just produce the cleaner blend that. >> produce the federally reformulated gas and sell to other states. to track whether they're withholding intentionally would be difficult. he and his colleagues have been pushing what they say is a win-win solution that would keep

the cleaner blend in california and keep gas prices down. we'll have that tonight at 6:00. live in oakland, stephanie trong, nbc bay area news. >> fingers crossed for many drivers. thank you so much, stephanie. in just a few hours from now, a vigil will be held to honor a mother killed in hercules. susie ko was found dead friday night in the entryway of her house on ash court. an autopsy today revealed she was stabbed several times and received blunt force trauma to the head. at the request of the hercules fire department, the fbi was called in to help process the crime scene. ko's 2011 blue subaru outback was also stolen. police are looking for your help tracking it down. it has an idaho license plate, 1a1 f 7680. ko's husband worked in idaho and susie ko spent half her time at their home in hercules. nearly 200 anti-war

protesters smashed windows and threw paint at a half a dozen buildings. police say the demonstration was to mark the 11th anniversary of the war in afghanistan. so far police have ♪ made no arrests. the prestigious nobel prize has been awarded to a bay area scientist. uc san francisco researcher shinya yamanaka wins the nobel for his work in medicine. he is responsible for a major stem cell breakthrough. yamanaka got his news at his home in japan. he shares the honor with a british researcher. today his colleagues at the gladstone institute in san francisco held a video news conference. yamanaka discovered how to transform ordinary skin cells into stem cells. it could one day help scientists grow taylor-made replacement organs. yamanaka said he was thankful for all the support he has received in the bay area. the president of the institute calls it a real breakthrough. >> this is a revolution in biology. no one thought it worked this way. that turning a few switches, you

a warning tonight for women in the east bay. a woman who was assaulted while walking the delta deanza regional trail managed to escape from a knife-wielding attacker. police say it happened around 6:00 this morning. the victim was walking the trail in west pittsburg near bailey road when a man jumped out of the brush and held a knife to her throat while groping her. she screamed, struggled and managed to run off. she says the man rode away on a blue mountain bike. police say the suspect was wearing a black leather jacket over a black hoodie with black gloves. decision 2012 is just 29 days away. and it's not just a presidential vote. food is getting political. prop 37 requires that food made with genetically modified ingredients be labeled as such. it is a good idea or will it cost you more money at the grocery store? here is nbc bay area's kris sanchez. >> reporter: non-gmo is

something you'll see on in of whole food markets items. they support prop 37, the genetically engineered labeling initiative because they say they want consumers to buy what they're buying. >> this is about food and proper labeling for the customers. and we do feel really strongly customers have a right to know what is in their food and how it is produced. >> reporter: according to no on 37, it will raise food prices by about $400 a year. many major california newspapers have come out against prop 37, some of them taking issue with the author of the measure, who they call lawsuit happy. the san francisco chamber of commerce is not a campaign contributor to the no side, but says prop 37 would be bad for california. >> it exposes people to litigation, unnecessarily, without any gain on any scientific basis. >> reporter: a sonoma wine grape farmer told us by phone she opposes the legislation for fear of litigation as well. >> they can haul you into court, and you have to defend yourself.

and pay their fees whether you're right or wrong. >> reporter: the secretary of state's website lists the fiscal impact of state administrative costs at up to a million dollars a year. the no on 37 side have more than $32 million to persuade voters, primarily from food and beverage makers and farmers. the yes side has about $4 million, primarily from the makers of organic goods. while whole foods market does not contribute cash to political causes, it supports prop 37 because they say it's what their customers want. consumers we spoke with say it is a small price to pay for transparency. >> consumers want to be able to look at the label and see what the ingredient are. >> anything that is genetic i think should be labeled, you know. people have a right to know what they're eating. >> reporter: as for the fact that there are so many exemptions, including for institutions like hospitals, cafeterias and restaurants, one consumer says it should be up to him decide. >> when i go in a restaurant,

it's not something i do every day. so i'm not really worried about it. however, in a supermarket, i absolutely think should have labels. >> reporter: voters now have about a month to make up their mind. kris sanchez, nbc bay area news. defiant. accusatory words from former penn state assistant coach jerry sandusky on the eve of his sentencing hearing for child molestation. the campus radio station has obtained a recording of sandusky's expected court statement. >> they can take away my life. they can make me out as a monster. they can treat me as a monster, but they can't take away my heart. in my heart i know i did not do these alleged disgusting acts. >> in the statements, sandusky goes on to blame the media, penn state and his young accusers who have issues, as he phrases it. prosecutors say as many as six of the ten victims sandusky was convicted of abusing will return to court tomorrow. sandusky faces a sentence of from 60 to more than 400 years in prison. his attorney plans to appeal the

conviction. joran van der sloot who is in prison for the murder of a woman in peru and suspected of the disappearance of natalie holloway. a dutch newspaper reports he impregnated a woman during a unsupervised visit. van der sloot reportedly confirmed the pregnancy to that newspaper. california labor leader cesar chavez was honored by president today. hundreds gathered in the town of keen where they planned the famous farm workers march. president obama painted a picture of a post war nation where most were thriving, but some were disenfranchised and invisible to the rest of the nation. >> no one seemed to care about the invisible farm workers who picked the nation's food. bent down in the beating sun, living in poverty, cheated by growers, abandoned in old age,

unable to demand even the most basic rights. but cesar cared. >> chavez, who died in 1993 is buried on the site where the monument was dedicated. today's action designates more than 100 acres of the property as a national monument. how about this? a group of native american swimmers took the cold plunge today. they dove off alcatraz at about 7:00 this morning for 1.2 mile swim to the san francisco shore. the swim is part of a year-long program meant to encourage healthy eating and fitness among tribes nationwide. if that water was just 20 degrees warmer, that would be fantastic. >> they're not even wearing a wet suit that is so impressive. and good thing they did it today, because i hear some changes are possible. >> who are you hearing that from? >> i'm hearing that from rob mayeda. >> we've been talking about a chance of seeing some changes. you might notice outside humidity is picking up. we have clouds building over some of our hilltops.

in fact, the view over san francisco looking to the north we do have some clouds there atop the marin headlands. you can see the band of low clouds. but the puffy cumulus clouds building in the sky during the day, moisture heating in the day and right over the mountains acting like a ski jump. the air starts to rise, creates the puffy looking clouds. not enough for showers today. but as more moisture and more lift comes into the bay area, yes, we're going to be talking about increasing chance of showers around some of our mountaintops. temperatures 60s and 70s outside. not too far off from today's highs. pretty steady sea breeze, keeping our temperatures in the tri-valley in the low 70s. so the clouds you just saw there north of san francisco, we're seeing a few more right around the santa cruz mountains. and you're on the summit of highway 17. this area especially will see a really good chance of showers starting tomorrow. and then as we head towards wednesday and thursday. right now the radar will show you thunder off to the north. that's are the area of low pressure is right now. it's sitting just offshore of the coast of eureka. by the time we get into wednesday, it will move inland just to the south of santa cruz,

taking the shower chances with it from north to south as we go through the next three days. so the best bet of seeing showers timeline wise will be later tuesday into wednesday. and then this low is going to move into southern california. but the kicker for it is the system dropping in on friday that mayoss a few more showers our way midday friday. so we're going to see cool temperatures this week. but the reward is next weekend does look pretty nice. we'll be warming up again. this time tomorrow, mt. hamilton, santa cruz mountains, you'll see a chance of showers for tuesday. and as we head towards wednesday, notice the south bay. the low tracking to the south. this is the best bet of seeing some showers. maybe even some embedded thunder. that's going to be morgan hill south for wednesday. and then look at that. by wednesday afternoon, really looking at the diablo range, santa cruz mountains best bet for seeing showers. tonight a little chilly, 40s and 50s outside. as you wake up tomorrow morning, winter coat weather for some, especially in the north bay. and then for the afternoon highs near 70 degrees in san jose. low 70s around the east bay valleys. out towards the tri-valley 75 in

pleasanton. lows to 70 in oakland. mid-60s for san francisco, and low 70s around the north bay. a chance of showers, especially for the santa cruz mountains and parts of the south bay as we get towards wednesday. thursday the low will move into southern california. then we've got one more system to deal with. that's going to be on friday, one that is going to weaken by the time it gets to the bay area. but still close enough to give us a chance of showers midday friday. but perfect timing, just like the bay area's big weekend. the best weather arriving saturday into sunday. 80s coming back once we deal with these few scattered showers. >> and we still believe there will be a's games tuesday, wednesday, and thursday at the coliseum. >> the weather looks good, by the way. tuesday, wednesday, and thursday. >> thanks, rob. still ahead, the fight against obesity gets some powerful backing. what soda companies are now doing that might actually have people buying less of their products. and halloween just around the corner. we've got a pumpkin for you. a big pumpkin. the winner at today's pumpkin weigh-in half moon bay. stay with us.

in health matters, will you think twice? soda companies are rolling out new vending machines that will put calorie count right in front of you. coke, pepsi and dr. peppler post the calorie information on the buttons when you press right when you make that soda selection. the machines will also carry low calorie and zero calorie drinks. the machines first in san antonio and chicago next year, and then spread nationwide. pregnant women need to consider the risks and benefits of eating fish when it comes to children and hyperactivity or adhd. researchers measured for mercury levels in hair samples of about 400 new mothers. they then followed up with their children eight years later. mother with higher mercury levels were more likely to have children with attention and hyperactivity problems, even though those levels were not considered hazardous. however, there was a reduced risk of adhd behaviors in children whose mothers ate
